As the world continues to become even more connected devices that we never envisaged being ‘connected’ now surround us in our day to day lives. Whether they be at home, in the office, the car, on the high-street or in your pocket – you’re never far from something that’s online.

Whilst clearly transformational, this proliferation of connected tech brings with it a range of management challenges. For network and IT managers additional controls need to be employed to balance the ease of remote access to these devices, versus the inherent risk of a device, running its own code, being available over an accessible network. Every single device increases your potential attack footprint and should be viewed at risk of compromise, zero-day attack, breach or worse still, data loss.

Mitigation levels often range depending on risk appetite; from the extremely risk-averse who choose to shield devices from the Internet entirely, relying on site-visits or local remote hands services for management and troubleshooting. However, the majority will employ conditional remote access via VPN. This often requires hardware, VPN configuration, credential management, 2FA, public IPs, monitoring, management overhead etc. These are generally the accepted costs of ‘secure’ remote access – but they’re still not without risk.

Stacuity Remote Access Proxy

For Stacuity, one of the many benefits of building an IoT-focused mobile data platform from the ground-up is being able to have day-to-day challenges like this firmly in mind. So, when we developed our Remote Access Proxy feature, we set out to not just address this issue but make it simple, make it secure, and make it scalable.

So in practice, very simply, connected endpoint(s) on your Stacuity network can be configured for access via a fully secure URL. No need for the device to have a public IP, no need for VPNs, no additional management overhead. And with our latest release we now support multiple ports on a single device. This means if you (for example) had a connected router with a Stacuity SIM, you could port-map to each device on your network you wish to manage – they don’t need a SIM, public IP or be accessible via a VPN anymore. This gives true remote management for all web-enabled devices.

Potential use-cases are plentiful

Potential use-cases are plentiful and industry agnostic; we can think of relevance to IT Support, Logistics, Healthcare, Smart Cities, Building Management, Fleet Management – and many more. Cost savings could head into the 80%+ range for businesses who have field-technicians or currently rely on 3rd parties to support management – just by using this feature alone!

We are working with system integrator and hardware partners to extend our mobile core network-as-a-service proposition, to support private 5G NSA deployments. This will be an exciting development for us and our partners. It will enable us to offer a seamless service across private and public networks. By white-labelling our multi-tenant platform, our partners will be able to use our software-defined mobile core network to support multiple customer deployments. If you are working in this space and would like to collaborate in some way, please reach out.
