What is a Packet Capture?
A packet capture is a recording of the raw data packets sent and received by a specific endpoint, taken directly from the Stacuity gateway. It is used to troubleshoot connectivity and performance issues, and is saved as a .pcap file that can be opened in Wireshark for detailed analysis.
Where this kind of diagnostic usually means raising a request and waiting on a third party, Stacuity makes it self-serve, so captures can be started, viewed in real time and downloaded directly from the portal.
When should you use this feature?
Packet captures are used to diagnose problems that other tools cannot explain, such as failed connections, poor performance or unexpected routing behaviour. Rather than guessing at the cause, you can see exactly what is happening at packet level, from DNS failures and TCP retransmissions to routing errors and TLS handshake failures.
