Beyond Standardisation: How Stacuity is Redefining the Telco API Landscape

At Stacuity, we recognise the value of standardisation in telecommunications. Initiatives like CAMARA play a vital role in simplifying developer access to mobile networks, moving away from fragmented, ad-hoc integrations towards common, standardised APIs. This evolution aligns well with telcos’ historical reliance on interoperability and scale. However, while standardisation is essential, it is often not enough.

The Limits of Standard APIs

CAMARA’s focus is clear: create a consistent (yet largely undifferentiated) layer of APIs that make core telco functions – such as location tracking, edge cloud orchestration, and network status queries – easier for developers to consume. This approach certainly reduces friction, but it also means APIs are constrained by traditional telco service models, domain concepts, and architectures.

While this makes sense for general-purpose integrations, it doesn’t empower true innovation. The biggest opportunities in connectivity arise when developers – many of whom are not telco specialists – can manipulate and control networks with the same ease as they do cloud services.

Rather than starting from the traditional operator-centric model, Stacuity designs its APIs from the perspective of end users and developers, addressing real-world use cases that go far beyond the scope of standardised APIs. Our platform is not just a set of telco functions wrapped in a standardised interface – it is a software-defined core network that offers deep programmability, fine-grained control, and powerful automation capability.

While we will 100% support CAMARA API standards where they align with our goal to enable Mobile Operators to best serve their customers and efficiently address new markets, they represent only a subset of what we enable. Our API-first architecture allows for richer, deeper interactions that extend well beyond standardised API definitions. In fact, one could argue that the APIs we are building – designed for seamless, intuitive integration with modern applications – could become a new benchmark for programmable connectivity.

Standardised APIs have an important role in reducing complexity and enabling widespread adoption. We support and encourage these efforts, but true transformation in connectivity requires more than incremental improvements to existing paradigms. It requires redefining how networks operate and how they are consumed.
